Balanchine Classic High Bun Tutorial

In this video I show you how to do a classic stage bun. This type of bun is often referred to as the “Balanchine Style”. I do my hair like this in any ballet that calls for a normal, high bun, such as Sleeping Beauty or the Nutcracker. It gives your head a really beautiful shape from the audience- you won’t look like you have a blob on the top of your head. It takes some practice, but you will get the hang of it.

1. Start with a high ponytail at the crown of your head.

2. Twist your hair from the top of the pony all the way to the end.

3. Twist hair up and around the pony to form the rounded top part of the bun. Pin this securely.

4. Twist the end of your hair into an “s” under the bun. Basically, you snake it around to create a little squiggle. Pin this in as you go. This might take some practice, but it gives the bun a beautiful shape onstage.

  1. I saw your video on this too! This was very helpful. I have very thin hair that goes to my mid back and have been trying to find ways to make my bun larger. My teachers call me little buns.
